Jolley Family
at Higham Ferrers

John Jolly was “of  Ringstead” when he married Harriot Pack of Higham Ferrers on 23rd December 1828. Their son Charles was born at Higham Ferrers in 1829 and was baptised at the church on 24th May the same year. Harriot died in September of the same year aged 29.

Charles Jolley was 11 years old in 1841 and he was living with James Jones and his family in High Street. Charles was already working as a cordwainer. Later he became a leather cutter.

In 1856 he married Susan Thompson (born Geddington) who was 9 years his junior. They had a daughter Harriet Ann born in 1859 (died 1864), and 4 sons, Charles Edward born in 1860, James born 1862, William born in March 1864 (died April 1866) and Arthur born in 1871. Their last child, William Pack Jolley was baptised March 6th 1873.

A daughter Ellen was baptised in 1866 but nothing more is known of her, and three other children were born, Alfred in 1867, Elizabeth in 1868, and Frank 1877, but all died in infancy.

Sadly Susan died of typhoid fever on Tuesday 16th July 1878.

In 1891 Charles Jolley, aged 61 was now a shoe manufacturer, and living in Back Road, with his youngest son, William Pack Jolley now aged 18 and working as a book-keeper.

Charles was buried in Higham Ferrers on Aug 7th 1912 aged 83.
