Alfred George Collins Vann

The Grammar School at Higham Ferrers
An advert from 1900

Alfred George Collins Vann came from a working class background. He was the School Master at South End Elementary School in Rushden in 1885 and his wife, Hannah Elizabeth Simpson Vann was a certificated teacher at the same school.  Whilst at Rushden he studied and frequently attended courses at Oxford University [see Log Book] gaining an MA in 1898.  In 1899 Alfred George Collins Vann became Head Master of Chichele Grammar School, and in 1900 advertised to open another – the  Rushden Grammar School, in Church Street.

His son Bernard Wm Vann was awarded the Victoria Cross in WWI.

Note: perhaps this school did not last, as J E Smith, in his overview of early schools in Rushden, in 1917, makes no mention of a grammar school in Rushden.
