The Millennium Project of Rushden & District History Society was a book entitled “A Thousand Years of Rushden” and was the result of sustained effort by many members of the Society.

The decision to produce a book was made in 1996, using for the twentieth century years the files of the Evening Telegraph and the Rushden Echo and Argus.  The following team of volunteers set to work, under the chairmanship of Geoff Wiggins, to extract at least one item of Rushden’s history for every month from 1900.

The sections to 1899 were compiled mostly by Eric Jenkins from his own archives.

The cut-off for publication in time for Christmas 1999 was June, but a single sheet supplement was later issued to complete the final six months.  The book sold out very quickly and a second reprint was ordered.  Sadly there are no longer any copies of the book available through the Society.

During the three and half years that it took to compile the contents a vast quantity of written articles was amassed.  A profusion of photographs from Eric Fowell's collection, together with many loaned by friends and members of the public, was used to illustrate the book.  An Editorial Committee comprising Geoff Wiggins, Lilian Butler and Eric Fowell then sifted through the material to select the items to be used in the book, with assistance from Jean Fowell, Greville Watson, and Pat and Eric Jenkins.

The articles that did not make it into the book have, largely, remained on file until now.

During 2007 and 2008, thanks to Jane Linnitt, Jennifer Sanders, Janine Musson, Theresa Clarke, and edited by Greville Watson, all the material (used and unused) was re‑typed and re‑formatted to produce a complete ‘timeline’ for the twentieth century.  Where some of the ‘extra’ articles are actually missing from the file, the data used has been taken from the book.  It has not been practical to attempt to use any of the original illustrations, and these pages have been produced purely as a written record.

It is interesting to note that, although the book is about Rushden, some of the items provided by the researchers relate to Higham Ferrers, and these have been included.
