Charles went with the Rushden Salvation Army Band, on Whit-Monday May 20th 1929,
to Edwinstow, Mansfield. Commandant Fitzjohn is written on the back of the picture above left - and Charles is 3rd from left in the other picture.

He enlisted, and trained with Class 143 HMS Royal Arthur.
At Royal Naval Hospital, Gosport, (November 1941) he was Leading Sick Berth Attendant. He was promoted to Sick Berth Petty Officer (September 1943) on HMS Woolwich.
