|A LIFETIME spanning over a hundred years from the reign of Queen Victoria to the present Queen Elizabeth 102 years in all and still with the energy to get up and about. This is Mrs. Emily Dickens who celebrated her 102nd birthday on Boxing Day.
Emily Dickens has lived in Rushden all her life and for over 50 years her address has been 148 Cromwell Road where in the twilight of her days she still manages to do odd jobs around the house. When we visited her she sat snugly by a blazing fire and although nearly totally deaf she took great interest in everything going on. As we talked she decided that she would wear her cardigan. Helping hands were offered by her daughter Maud but these were firmly, refused.
"She is very strong willed and very independent," said her daughter. "That has helped her to live to such a ripe old age," she continued.
In her younger and more active days her main hobby was to make dresses for the family, and it would be nothing for her to sit up till one or two in the morning.
She has a large family which includes seven great, great grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and eight grandchildren. Pour of her daughters are also still alive. The family, who nearly all live in Rushden or close by, congregated on her birthday and let's hope there will be many more to come.
