Bozeat War Memorial

The Rushden Argus, 9th July 1920

Bozeat Memorial - Stone Unveiled
Tributes to the Memory of the Fallen

On Saturday, in the presence of a large concourse of people, a fitting memorial was unveiled in the Cemetery to the thirty-nine men of Bozeat who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War.

The obelisk, placed in the cemetery, was from the designs of Mr. S. Saint, of Rushden, who carried out the work in a most satisfactory manner. It stands eleven feet high, and is of Weldon stone with marble panels three feet square, and contains the names of the thirty-nine heroes, with the inscription:

“Sacred to the men of the village who
fell in the Great War 1914-1918.”

The cost was about £80, and it was raised by a representative committee with the Chairman of the Parish Council as President.

In 2009 a book "For Crown & Country" was produced with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund under the Awards for All scheme — to commemorate the sacrifice made by villagers who lost their lives in both World Wars.

After that book the villagers thought a book about those who came back from WWII would be a fitting addition.

"For Crown & Country ....... coming home" was launched in November 2010, aided by funds from "Northampton County Council Empowering Councillors & Communities Scheme" via Councillor George Blackwell.

Both books produced by the parish council, are edited by James Spencer (chairman), Jennifer Spencer and Andrew Underwood. Mark Wright also helped with the first book.
