Valuation Office Survey 1910 - 1914
Introduction

This church yard is managed with wildlife in mind.
St Peter's Church - Newton Bromswold

In 1910 every house, property and piece of land in the country was to be surveyed and valued, and is sometimes called the "1910 Domesday Book". The books kept at Northamptonshire Record Office (NRO) detail the occupier and owner and type of property (house, shop, premises etc) and the area of any land, which was then valued. This figure was then used for other calculations for taxation and poor rates. There are many alterations in these books as properties changed hands over the ensuing 4 years, but we have transcribed the original names entered. Our listings by streets give names of occupier & owner, the type of property and the annual value. The National Archive (NA) holds other listings taken at the same time, called "field books", and these detail the property giving number of rooms and other information. The number given in the field books at NRO will help the researcher to locate the entry more easily in the other documents at NA.

The sort of information that can be found is noted here for Albion Place, Rushden (extracted by Sheila Fewings in 2000).

The codes - GF is ground floor, House B.S - brick & stone, WC - water closet etc.

The reference number for Rushden was IR 58/44485 PRO and the survey date was 7th May 1913.
