A pretty wedding took place yesterday afternoon when Seaman “Sol” Upton, elder son of Mr and Mrs S Upton, 32 Kimbolton-road, Higham Ferrers, was married to Miss Florence E S Winter, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs A H Winter, 14 Thrift-street, Higham Ferrers, at St Mary’s Church, Higham, the Rev. W Peppercorn being the officiating minister.
The bride wore a pretty dress of ivory crepe de chine with silk trimmings and a bridal fall with orange blossom, and the three bridesmaids (Misses Lilian, Doris and Linda Upton, sisters of the bridegroom) were charmingly attired in white voile dresses with felt hats to match and carried bouquets of roses, carnations, and ferns, the gifts of the bridegroom. The bride carried a splendid bouquet of arum lilies, roses and carnations, white heather, and ferns. She was given away by her sister, Mrs A E Bennett (London). Mr A Upton (brother of the bridegroom) acted as best man. The presents were handsome and costly. After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride. Seaman Upton is a native of Higham. He joined the Navy about ten weeks ago and obtained a special leave for his wedding. He formerly worked for Messrs Tebbutt and Hall, shoe manufacturers, Raunds, and he was well-known in this district as a professional footballer, having played two seasons with Tottenham Hotspur and three with Portsmouth.
