The preliminary Census returns which were issued this week contain many figures of local interest, and the publication incidentally brings to an end the considerable speculation that has taken place as to what Rushden’s population would be.

Previous figures at Rushden have been, 1801 (when the first Census was taken), 818; 1841, 1311; 1851, 1,460; 1861, 1748; 1871, 2,122; 1881, 3,657; 1891, 7,442; 1901, 12,447; 1911, 13,354; 1921, 13,505.
It is interesting to note that the population at the last Census has always been stated as 13,511 so that the increase is six more than might have been expected.
