Rushden shoe firm chief dies

Head of C W Horrell Ltd., the Rushden shoe manufacturers, Mr William MacCarthy Horrell died early this morning at his home, “Asholme,” Hayway, Rushden.  Aged 68, he had been ill since May, 1954, and critically ill during the last week.

Only child of the late Mr C W Horrell, noted for his public work in Rushden and the county, he was educated at Wellingborough School, familiarised himself with the office and factory routine even before school days were over, and as a youth helped energetically in his father’s business.

During the 1914-18 war he served in the Royal Artillery, and in the last war he gave much time to the duties of a Home Guard officer.

It was after his father’s death in 1948 that he became chairman and managing director of C W Horrell Ltd., and he continued to lead the firm during his years of convalescence.

FREEMASON

Mr Horrell belonged to the Pemberton and Risdene Lodges of Freemasons and was a Past Master of the Risdene Lodge.  He succeeded the late Mr F J Sharwood as president of the St Cecilia Singers and when his health broke down the office was taken over by his wife, Mrs Beatrice Horrell, who was re-elected to the presidency last Monday.

Devoted to Methodism, Mr Horrell was attached to the Rushden church for many years and gave a great deal of help to the village churches, especially the one at Stanwick, where he lived for a time.

The three children are Mrs Jan May, who is living in Surrey, Mrs Paddy Allin, of Nottingham and Mr John Horrell, of Hargrave, who is a director of C W Horrell Ltd.

The funeral service will be at Rushden Methodist Church on Monday and will be followed by cremation at Kettering.
