John Upton and his wife Maria were living in Bourton, Oxforshire in 1861. They had 4 sons, George, Uria, Solomon and Aaron, and 2 daughters Sarah and Ann. The following year Patience completed the family. At Birmingham, in 1873 at the age of 15, Aaron enlisted by giving his age as 18. In 1880 Aaron came to Higham Ferrers, where his older brother Solomon had settled, and was lodging in Bedford Row. Here he met Lucy, the eldest daughter of Enoch and Mary Patenall, of Higham Ferrers, and they married the following year. They moved to Rushden where they had eight children: Beatrice 1883, Eleazar 1885, Albert 1889, Leonard 1891, John 1893, Elsie 1896, Oliver 1898 and Edith in 1900. By the time the 1891 census was taken the family had returned to Higham Ferrers.
