A copy of a postcard, the scene was recorded by S Powell and it was published and printed by C G Jowitt - he came to Rushden about 1900 but only remained here
for about 10 years, so we can date the postcard to 1900-1910.

H E Bates the writer, born at Rushden in 1905 - his maternal grandfather George Lucas lived in one of these cottages
In 1930 the area became a Memorial Garden to Bessie Patenall. She was sister of Thomas Patenall, whose wife Clara was Commandant at the V.A.D. Hospital during WWI, and Bessie was Sister in Charge.
