Pricking is done by clickers with an awl, placed through holes in the pattern. Stitchmar king is done by machine such as the Edward Stitchmarking Machine and consists of a line of dots on a line traced on the leather. Each section of the shoe is fed up to a pattern and a pad of white ink is swung back resulting in the ink being impressed on the correct part of the pattern where the machinist can follow it.
