Shoemaking - Pricking and Stitchmarking

Picture of a stitch pricker from a catalogue of shoe tools

Pricking is done by clickers with an awl, placed through holes in the pattern.

Stitchmar

king is done by machine such as the Edward Stitchmarking Machine and consists of a line of dots on a line traced on the leather. Each section of the shoe is fed up to a pattern and a pad of white ink is swung back resulting in the ink being impressed on the correct part of the pattern where the machinist can follow it.
